  • So let’s get to the episode recap finally, shall we…
  • This episode is titled Lie To Me
  • Playground, kid left and mom is late, Drusilla shows up.
    • She is obviously going to kill the boy.
    • Angel shows up and intervenes
  • This is the first interaction between Angel and Drusilla since Spike and Dru have arrived in Sunnydale.
    • So much history between Angel and Drusilla, we are going to get some of the details later in this episode.
    • When Angel was Angelus, he had an obsession with Drusilla. He stalked her, tortured her mentally, killed her family, horrible horrible things.
    • Obviously, as a human, Drusilla was terrified of Angel and that is not something that we really see much of in the Buffy series but it does come out in the Angel series.
    • Drusilla still obviously has affection for him.
  • Drusilla can see Angel’s love for the slayer.
    • “This is just the beginning” lots of foreshadowing what is to come here, she talks about the Slayer doesn’t even know what is coming, referencing Angel turning into Angelus.
  • Giles has been researching Spike, still doesn’t know why Spike is in Sunnydale.
  • Buffy and Willow passing notes talking about Angel with a girl in the park, at this point they still don’t know who Drusilla is, they have only seen Spike. It just didn’t occur to me that this was the first time that Buffy had seen Drusilla. Because of the way they were positioned, and the setting I can see how Buffy might have interpreted their encounter as being more intimate than it actually was.
  • Intro Ford – never liked Ford at all, he gives off a sleazy vibe.
    • Buffy and Ford seem very touchy-feely, close, very close (Billy Fordham) I thought this was unnatural. We don’t see Buffy act like this with any of her friends here in Sunnydale.
    • Ford lies to Buffy about what he is doing in Sunnydale and that he is now a student there. (Lie #1)
  • Angel is at the Bronze where Ford has met Buffy. Ford is giving Angel the manly evaluation. Sizing up the competition like all guys do when that Caveman DNA kicks in.
    • Angel lies to Buffy about not being out last night. Lie #2
  • Buffy has Ford go for a walk with her and leaves Angel, girl thing. She is being pouty because she knows that Angel is lying about last night. Again if she would just talk to him about it, all would be well.
    • What a quick turn around from the last time we saw Buffy and Angel together, kissing. Buffy seems very fickle to me here and I don’t like it.
  • As they walk home Buffy sends Ford back for her purse and goes to kill a vampire and save some girl.
    • Ford sees Buffy fighting the vampire and stake him
    • He knows that Buffy is the slayer.
    • Buffy lies to Ford about what he heard and saw Lie #3
  • Ford goes to secret vamp club
    • Goth kids in the club want to be vampires.
    • Marvin/Diego the wannabe vamp
    • Die young and stay pretty – Ford’s motto
    • The question that jumped out at me early in this episode as something I wanted to talk about was these kids in this club. Why do they want to be vampires? What is it about vampires that these kids find alluring? What is it about themselves that they are dissatisfied with?
    • Lets start with the easy one shall we… what is it about themselves that these kids are dissatisfied with? Well, they are high school kids so pretty much everything right? So what is it about Vampires that is so attractive to these kids? Let’s talk about some of the core vampire traits.
      • Live forever
      • Never Age
      • Drink Blood
      • Only come out at night
      • Super strong
      • Super powerful
      • Think back to the second episode of the series and the change that happened to Jesse.
      • You may not agree with those kids, but can you understand where they are coming from? I can!
        • like Buffy does. But their motivation isn’t so foreign is it?
  • Angel shows up at Willow’s house
    • Willow is very uncomfortable because she is not supposed to have boys in her room.
    • Angel wants Willow to do a background check on Billy Fordham
    • Ford is not registered at their school.
    • Angel wants Willow to lie to Buffy about the investigation. Lie #4
  • That night Ford and Buffy tour sunnydale,
    • Happen across some vampires.
    • Buffy kills one, Ford uses the other one to find out where spike is. Lie #5 because he tells Buffy he killed the vampire.
  • Angel, Xander and Willow tracked Fords records to the secret club.
    • The Bronze with different lighting.
    • The lonely ones – they who walk with the night are not interested in harming anyone, they are above us exalted
    • Angel calls her a fool
  • Buffy has called Giles and Jenny off there date to talk about the vampires she saw.
    • Jenny took Giles to Monster trucks
    • Giles lied about enjoying the trucks. Lie #6
    • In Giles’ research about Spike buffy sees a picture of Drusilla
      • Supposedly killed by an angry mob in Prague
      • The vampire that Ford was supposed to have killed was in the library and stole one of Giles’ books.
      • Buffy realizes Ford lied when he said he killed the vampire.
  • Spike and Drusilla talk about her going out the other night and seeing Angel.
    • Spike is jealous
    • Ford shows up
  • Ford wants to be a vampire.
    • Ford will trade – make him a vampire and he gives Spike the slayer
  • Angel goes to see Buffy at home
    • Angel is there to warn her about Ford
    • Buffy questions him about Drusilla
      • Angel asks Buffy if she loves him – she says I love you, I don’t know if I trust you.
      • Angel tells Buffy that Dru was an obsession
        • Tells her about what he did to Drusilla
  • Ford tells Buffy he has a secret to show her tonight Lie #7
    • Buffy is mad at Willow and Xander
  • Chanterelle is the girl vamp lover who shows up in Season 3 episode 1
    • Buffy has followed Ford to the secret club
    • Diego locks them in the club
    • Ford says “everybody lies”
    • Ford is going to be a vampire so that he doesn’t die from a brain tumor. This fits right in with what I was saying before about feeling powerless. But Ford adds another element with his character… desparation.
  • Ford is crazy
    • Is he crazy or is he desparate? So while in a way Fords desparation to live is ironically a strange form of suicide.
    • But desperation is one of those funny things. It is a perception. If people perceive that they are out of options if they perceive that desperation then they will do anything to get themselves out. So once again, I think Ford is an idiot, but his motivations are not so hard to relate to.
  • Buffy explains that they aren’t going to be changed they are going to be killed but they can’t open the door from the inside.
    • Spike organizes his vampires as they go to kill all the kids
    • Spike is going to feed Buffy to Dru to make her better.
  • Vampires come in and start killing people
    • Buffy goes for Drusilla
    • Threatens to kill her unless Spike stops all the vampires.
  • Angel, Willow, Xander show up
    • Buffy says they will come back later for the body (Ford)
    • Buffy goes to Ford’s grave to pay respects, the first time we have seen her do this, go to a grave of someone that she knew personally. She is there with Giles
    • Turns out they did make Ford a vampire, Buffy stakes him.
    • Buffy asks if life gets easy
      • Interesting that Giles gives this statement as he has just himself entered a kind of grey zone in the last episode.
  • End Episode.
  • Rate the episode
    • It is really tough to follow an episode like Halloween. One that was so thought provoking and just down right cool. Unfortunately, Lie To Me is a victim of season placement. However, even if left to stand on it’s own merits and not as a follow up act to Halloween, this episode still ranks pretty low for me.
    • Lose a point for all the lying
    • Lose a point for the awkware I love you moment
    • Gain a point for Giles going to see monster trucks
    • Gain a point because this episode actually warranted two audio clips
    • So the bonus points are a wash and we are left with just my rating of the episode witch is a 4 out of 10. Not at all one of my favorite episodes of the series.
  • Thanks to everyone for tuning into another episode of the Hellmouth Podcast.

  • John from Jersey:

    Bryan;
Just finished listening to your “Lie To Me” podcast. Great analysis as always.

I personally think this episode was rather good. Points for: 1) Zander snarking on Angel. 2) Willow (in bunny slippers) doing the “forbidden love” thing with Angel. 3) Giles plus monster trucks/funny cars = win. 4) Faux vamp stealing Angel’s fashion sense was a chuckle. 5) Crazy bird killing Dru was fun. 6) Casual cemetery vamp stake was classic Buffy.

I think your 4 rating was too low. You’re probably cranky because no Cordy in this episode!

  • Really? 4 was too low? You are right episodes without Cordelia make me cranky. I love that character.
