  • This episode is going to have a little more recap than the last two episodes because for this episode I think it is important.
  • Guy in suit walking around campus.
    • Looking for Giles, it’s obviously urgent.
    • Phillip is choked to death and zombie lady melts
  • Opening Credits
  • Ripper history in the form of Giles’ dreams.
  • The Scoobies playing anywhere but here talking about Giles as a kid (his diapers were tweed)
    • This kind of plays into one of the big themes in this episode which is the way that kids view adults. Often times kids don’t realize that adults where once children themselves. They see them as always having been adults. Probably the best example of this is parents, but teachers are another great example.
    • Jenny shows up to talk to Giles
  • Cops are waiting for Giles in the library
  • Buffy is at hospital to protect blood delivery truck.
    • Giles doesn’t show up.
  • Giles is back at home, Buffy shows up there.
    • Giles is drunk
    • Giles is obviously very distracted and hiding something.
    • Won’t tell Buffy anything.
    • Buffy knows something is up.
  • Giles is calling trying to get in touch with Deidre
    • Turns out he has been trying to contact a list of people.
    • On the list left alive is Ethan Rayne and Giles.
    • We actually see here that Giles has a tattoo like Phillip Henry had.
  • Buffy shows up to talk to Ms. Calendar about Giles
    • Cordelia tells Buffy about the police being at the library.
  • Buffy goes to the library to call Giles and sees someone lurking in the stacks.
    • It’s Ethan Rayne
    • Ethan lets on that he knows Giles
    • Phillip Zombie shows up to kill Ethan
    • Buffy fights Zombie Phillip
    • Giles shows up.
    • Ethan calls Giles Ripper – this is the first time the Scoobies have heard him called that.
    • Giles grabs him by the back of the hair(again ripper persona comes out), the Scoobies are seeing the ripper in Giles come out for the first time.
    • Phillip breaks out of the cage. Xander saves Cordelia – more foreshadowing, they touch for an unnecessarily long period of time.
  • Buffy is angry and wants to know what is going on.
    • The Mark of Eygon?
    • Giles still refuses to answer any questions.
    • Tells Buffy to stay out of it.
    • The Scoobies aren’t having it, they get with the research.
  • Giles has taken Jenny back to his place.
  • Willow finds something in her research.
    • Eygon also called the sleepwalker possesses an unconscious host.
    • They realize that Jenny was unconscious and is now possessed.
  • Buffy heads to Giles’
  • Giles was studying history at Oxford and the occult by night
    • Got in with the wrong crowd.
    • Giles and the group killed Randal who was possessed and lost control.
      • Giles has already committed murder.
      • Giles doesn’t know how to stop Eygon without killing Jenny.
  • Buffy goes to the costume shop
    • Ethan knocks Buffy out
    • He tattoos the mark of Eygon on Buffy
  • Willow is trying to figure out how to kill Eygon
    • Willow figures out how to kill Eyghon and runs off
  • Buffy is now marked
    • Giles has a vision and sees Buffy with the mark
    • Eyghon shows up at the costume shop
    • Giles shows up and offers to take Buffy’s place
    • Angel comes barging in and fights with Eyghon
    • Eyghon is killed
  • The next day at school Giles tries to talk to Ms. Calendar.
    • She wants some space.
    • You can see the pain on his face.
    • Buffy talks to Giles, tries to cheer him up
    • Turns out Giles was once young, shortsighted and foolish.
    • He and Buffy have something in common and that is kind of OK
      • Liked Buffy in this scene.
  • End Episode.
  • Rate the episode
    • This episode was just kind of amporphus, we get a little bit of Giles but not a lot, it is a little bit of the monster of the week. No mention of Spike or Drusilla.
    • Bonus point for Ripper stuff
    • Bonus point for the cool way that they kill Eyghon
    • Lose half a point because the whole demon jumps to an unconscious or dead person was a little bit of a cop out in my opinion, and the whole Ms. Calendar thing how she got the demon seemed staged and forced.
    • Lose a point because I didn’t feel like the theme was developed as well
      • as a lot of the other episodes which leaves this episode at a 7.5
      • On its own it sould have been a 7, after the bonus points we are at 7.5.
      • I think I finally settled on 6.75
  • Thanks to everyone for tuning into another episode of the Hellmouth Podcast.

  • John from Jersey:

Another excellent analysis Bryan. Very dark episode. I don’t like seeing Giles so vulnerable.

Pluses for an Ethan Rayne appearance and Cordy snark. And a double plus for Ms. Calendar in those tight pants. Negatives for….well, nothing….it’s BUFFY! Solid 7 episode.

  • I agree John, this episode is one of the darker episodes, primarily because we see a darker side of Giles who is usually the stand-up guy and often times is the moral compass for the group.
