Buffy The Vampire Slayer Season 1 Episode 12 – Prophecy Girl
- Open this episode at the bronze, where Buffy encountered her first vampire when she moved to Sunnydale.
- Xander is talking to Willow about knowing how he feels about her, being friends for a long time, will you date me? He is practicing on Willow what he is planning to say to Buffy.
- He starts over, trying a different approach. Starts talking about the Spring Fling a dance where students choose a mate.
- Xander finally manages to pump himself up enough that he is ready to just be direct. Tell Buffy how he feels about her and ask her to the dance. However, Buffy has not shown up at the Bronze yet, were could she be?
- We see a car parked in a grassy knoll/clearing with the windows fogged up.
- Then we see Buffy fly onscreen having been apparently thrown by a vampire.
- Cordelia and her new man are apparently making with the hot and heavy in the car. Cordelia thinks that she hears something.
- Buffy stands up and turns to face the vampire who looks at her as though he were looking at his next meal.
- That is until Buffy pulls a stake out from behind her and the vampire realizes this is no ordinary prey.
- The vampire attacks and Buffy dusts him pretty quickly.
- She has killed three vampires in one night, Giles would be proud.
- Giles is in the library pouring over his books. One in particular, the Pergamum Codex.
- He translates from the book.
- “The Master shall rise and the Slayer … My God.
- As he starts to continue reading, there is what appears to be an earthquake.
- We see the various members of the group and how they react to the earthquake.
- The last one we see is Giles in the library. We see the library virtually split in half and then we see the Master in his lair reaching upwards enjoying the earthquake.
- The Master is in his lair, very excited. This is a sign it is nearly his time.
- He translates from the book.
- Opening Credits
- The group is leaving science class
- Xander tries to hint at Willow that she needs to skedaddle so that he can have “the talk” with Buffy.
- Xander: Buffy, I want you to go to the dance with me. You and me on a date. Well, you’re not laughing. That’s a good start. Buffy, I like you a lot. And I know we’re friends, and we’ve had experiences. We fought some bloodsucking fiends, and that’s all been a good time but I want more. I want to dance with you.
- Buffy doesn’t know what to say, doesn’t want to ruin the friendship, and doesn’t think of Xander that way.
- Xander: Forget it. I’m not him. I mean, I guess a guy’s gotta be undead to make time with you.
- Giles is in the library on the phone. Talking to whom…
- Think it is pretty obvious that he is talking to Angel. Says that he needs to see him.
- Miss Calendar: Something’s going on Rupert and I’m guessing you already know what it is.
- The stuff that she has been getting/seeing on the Internet is apocalypse stuff. She thinks the end is pretty seriously nigh.
- Miss Calendar also has some crazy monk from Cortona emailing her about some Anointed One.
- Giles snaps at Jenny and tells her to find out everything the monk knows and he will explain later.
- Cordelia is walking through the halls of Sunnydale high with her new man and they are discussing preparations for the Spring Fling.
- She sees Willow and calls her.
- She asks Willow to show up in the morning at the Bronze and set up the sound system. Willow agrees.
- While talking to Cordelia, Willow sees Xander sitting in a classroom throwing a ball against the wall.
- Willow goes to talk to Xander
- Favorite Quote of the episode
- Willow: “How’d it go?”
- Xander: “On a scale of 1 to 10, it sucked.”
- Xander then decides that he will go with Willow to the dance.
- So Xander decides to spend his evening lying down, listening to country music. The music of pain.
- Favorite Quote of the episode
- Sunnydale high school that night.
- Buffy is getting her stake out of one of the school lockers. Walks over to the sink in the girls bathroom and turns it on. The sink is running with blood.
- She immediately heads to the library to talk to Giles about it.
- She walks in and is not noticed by Giles who is standing in his office talking to Angel about the prophecy that he read in the Codex.
- Giles: It’s clear. It’s what’s going to happen now. It’s happening now. I’ve checked it against all my other volumes. It’s very real. Listen, some prophecies are a bit dodgy. They’re mutable. Buffy herself has thwarted them time and time again, but this is the Codex. There is nothing in it that does not come to pass. (side note – this is true. Giles is right about this)
- Angel: then you’re reading it wrong.
- Giles: I wish to God I were, but it’s very plain. Tomorrow night Buffy will face the Master, and she will die.
- Buffy goes a little hysterical at hearing this.
- Buffy takes off the cross that Angel gave her and throws it on the ground.
- Willow is in her room trying to study, but she is obviously distracted. She is thinking about Xander.
- She calls him, Xander is doing just what he said he would, he is laying on his bed listening to country music. He obviously doesn’t want to talk. He picks up the phone hangs it up and the sets it off the hook.
- Buffy is in her bedroom going through her scrapbook.
- It feels like she is re-living her best memories from a life that is about to be cut short. She feels robbed, and angry, but she is taking time to appreciate the good times she has had.
- Her mom comes in and can see that something is wrong.
- Buffy tries to talk her mom into going away for the weekend.
- Her mom asks about the Spring Fling
- She things that she is upset because the right person didn’t ask her.
- She surprises her with a beautiful dress.
- Tells her to go to the dance.
- Buffy just can’t escape that there are things in life that she will not ever experience.
- Next day at Sunnydale high Cordelia and Willow are there to find out why Kevin (Cordelia’s beau in this episode) and his friends never brought the sound system to the bronze.
- Kevin and his friends have been slaughtered.
- Willow is very visibly disturbed and shaken up by the scene in the A/V room.
- Back in Buffy’s bedroom, she has apparently finally worked up the courage to try on the dress that her mother bought for her for the Spring Fling.
- You can she see as she looks at herself in the mirror that maybe she if finding that glimmer of hope that maybe her future isn’t written for her and she can go to the dance and have a life.
- Then her hope comes crashing down on her as her mother walks into her bedroom and says there is something on the news, it’s Willow.
- Willow’s bedroom.
- She is trying to explain to Buffy that the vampires took the world and made it theirs… and they had fun.
- She asks Buffy, “What are we gonna do?”
- Buffy responds “What we have to.”
- It is in this moment that Buffy realizes that yes she is going to embrace her destiny. She is going to be the hero, face the master and she is going to die.
- She makes Willow promise to stay in tonight and tells her to “Take Care”.
- The Master’s Lair
- He is very close to being able to break free from his mystical prison. He sends the anointed one out to perform his task.
- We are back in the library.
- Giles is with Miss Calendar and appears to be preparing for battle.
- Miss Calendar is reviewing what Giles has just told her about the Master and how he was imprisoned in the first place.
- The Master was trying to open the Hellmouth and got stuck in it.
- She is also surprised to find out that Buffy is the Vampire Slayer.
- Giles asks if Jenny got in touch with the monk.
- Based on a scripture from the Bible that the monk referenced and the writings of Aurelius, Giles figures out that the anointed one might be a child.
- Giles doesn’t intend on passing this information along to Buffy because he plans on facing the Master himself.
- Buffy shows up at this moment and tells him no, she will go.
- The two of them argue about whether or not Giles is going to let Buffy go face the Master. She ultimately ends the conversation by knocking him unconscious.
- Buffy picks up the cross that Angel gave her. Signifies her resuming the role, the responsibilities of the Slayer.
- Buffy realizes that she will die if she faces the Master. But maybe she will take him with her.
- She tells Jenny “tell him… think of something cool, tell him I said it.”
- Turns out Buffy doesn’t have to look to hard for the anointed one. She walks outside and there he is.
- Back in the library…
- Willow and Xander have shown up at the library and Giles has filled them in on everything.
- Miss Calendar is a little harsh in the scene. She doesn’t have anything invested in Buffy like the others do and seems quite willing to let Buffy die if it means saving the world.
- Both Xander and Willow are little miffed that Giles let her in the club.
- Xander doesn’t care if it means the end of the world. He is going to help Buffy, he may not know where she went, but he knows how to find out.
- Buffy enters the Master’s lair.
- Xander goes and finds Angel
- Xander tells Angel to take him to the Master
- Angel says he’d be dead before he had a chance to breathe.
- Xander thinks at the end of the day Angel is pretty much a vampire. But Buffy seems to think he is a person. Right now Angel needs to prove her right.
- Angel says “You’re in love with her”
- Xander: Aren’t you
- Back in the library
- They are going into research mode and Miss Calendar has provided a direction. If the Master rises, the Hellmouth will open… where?
- They need to find the location of the Hellmouth.
- Buffy takes the final steps into the inner sanctum of the Master’s lair.
- The fight begins with the playful banter between Buffy and the Master
- Meanwhile Xander and Angel are hurrying to find their way down into the Master’s lair.
- Now the Master is bantering with Buffy, a slight feeling that already the tide has turned and Buffy is not in control of this fight.
- In the library
- They are trying to reason through where the Hellmouth is.
- The vampires will be gathering, forming an army.
- The last time they gathered was the Harvest that went down at the bronze where the prom is being held tonight.
- Jenny and Willow agree to go to the bronze and warn the students.
- Giles is going to stay and continue his research.
- Buffy and the Master continue their dance
- The master sneaks up behind Buffy, disarms her and grabs her throat choking her.
- In the parking lot, Jenny and Willow are on their way to the bronze
- Turns out the vampires aren’t congregating at the bronze. They are congregating at the high school.
- Jenny and Willow are surrounded in the parking lot.
- In the Master’s lair, Buffy breaks free from his chokehold and makes a run for it.
- The Master thrusts out his hand and halts Buffy dead in her tracks
- Master: You tried to stop me, it was noble of you. You heard the prophecy that I was about to break free and you came to stop me. But prophecies are tricky creatures.. They don’t tell you everything. You’re the one that sets me free. If you hadn’t come, I couldn’t go. Think about that.
- Then he bites her.
- He drops her in the water.
- He then breaks free of his mystical prison.
- Angel and Xander find the Master’s lair. They find Buffy dead.
- Xander freezes, he can’t believe they are too late.
- He won’t accept that Buffy is dead.
- Xander has to be the one to save Buffy. Angel has no breath.
- Back to Willow and Miss Calendar who are surrounded by vampires
- Xander continues CPR on Buffy.
- Buffy is revived.
- Cordelia gets Will and Jenny to the library by driving straight through the school.
- They barricade themselves in the library with Giles.
- The master walks out onto the roof of the school to survey his world.
- Xander and Angel help Buffy to her feet.
- She isn’t weak from being dead, she feels strong. She feels different. She is ready to go.
- Something creepy is coming up through the Hellmouth about to grab willow.
- Buffy is coming after the Master with a bad attitude.
- She tells Xander and Angel to stay and keep the other vampires off her.
- She goes to once again face the Master.
- Willow grabbed by the Hellmouth creepy creature.
- Buffy catches up to the Master on the roof.
- I may be dead but I’m still pretty which is more than I can say for you.
- Giles saves Willow from the Hellmouth monster.
- Buffy is no longer afraid of the Master.
- She throws the master through the roof of the library and he falls on a huge wooden stake. He dies and the Hellmouth closes.
- Buffy and the group gather in the library.
- The vampires are gone, the master is dead, and the Hellmouth is closed.
- Xander tells them about Buffy’s brush with death.
- Ironically they all decide to go to the Spring Fling to get away from the mess and the horrible day.
- We saved the world I say we party. I mean I got all pretty
- The last image is the skeleton of the master on the stake.
