Innocence Discussion
As promised in the most recent episode of the podcast, here is the place for all of you to comment and begin a discussion regarding all of the topics and information brought up in the most recent Hellmouth Podcast for the Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 2 Episode 14 – Innocence. Once again I want to thank Peg for co-hosting the episode with me.
Let the discussion begin…

First off, wow, what a podcast, both in terms of length and content. You have certainly earned the week off.
Peg was outstanding. She knows her stuff cold, and had an infectious enthusiasm. It was obvious from how much both of you laughed that you were having fun recording the episode. I also thought that it was particularly useful to have a woman’s perspective on an episode where and underlying theme was men turning evil when you sleep with them.
Many of my favorite scenes were brought up. Among them were:
Angel exhaling smoke after biting the girl smoker. I can’t tell you how much that one shocked and impressed me the first time around. Count me among those who FAR prefers Angelus to the broody and whining Angel.
The WIllow/Cordelia/Xander scene where Willow sees them kissing, Simply brilliant acting by all three, as was the Willow/Xander confrontation in the hallway
Oz/Willow in the truck. Seth Green has said that Buffy was the one time he got to be a cool character, it’s a shame that it didn’t last longer.
This episode also had my favorite Xander quote – “I’m 17, looking at linoleum makes me wanna have sex”
I still of course disagree completely about “lying gypsy spy tramp” Jenny Calendar.
First, Jenny Calendar did NOT have to be involved romantically with Giles in order to watch Buffy/Angel. She was very useful to the Scoobies both with her computer and technopagan knowledge, and could have helped them without arousing any suspicion at all simply as a fellow faculty member with a common interest in demons.
In fact, if her mission were more important than her own personal feelings, and she was faking her feelings for Giles for some unfathomable reason, then why would she cut Giles off so completely and try to drive him away after The Dark Age? Did the mission cease to be the top priority?
I think that the simplest explanation is that her feelings for Giles were genuine, as was her anger at him, as was her remorse afterward. The simplest explanation is also the most consistent.
And “lying tramp”? Isn’t tramp a bit of a stretch for someone who never slept with anyone in the series? And “lying”? When? She had an ulterior motive/secret identity, like almost every other character in any Joss Whedon series at one time or another. Were Buffy and Riley completely honest in the beginning or did they conceal their secrets? Do Jenny’s actions even begin to compare in terms of betrayal to Giles injecting Buffy with drugs in Helpless?
I respect the other opinion, but I remain extremely unconvinced.
Brian;
Peg is a great addition. Just what the pod needed. Only complaint is the audio quality on Pegs end. That needs work. The Hellmouth Pod just gets better every week. Congrats.
So far the response seems to be that Peg was a big hit! I am glad that everyone enjoyed the podcast, I had a blast recording with Peg. Remember, you too can be a guest host on the Hellmouth Podcast, just email me and let me know what episode you want to co-host. If you don’t have a specific episode you want to host just let me know you are open to any and I will find an episode for you. Thanks for all the great comments.
Great podcast. I am playing catch-up and just listened to Innocence. I think Peg did a great job. I agree with you about Jenny. I never liked her. You touched on many of my favorite scenes. I don’t think you mentioned it, but when Angelus was talking to Buffy at his apartment, she asked him, “Wasn’t I good?” He said something like, “You were like a pro.” Ouch. Ouch. It is like something out of a nightmare.
