Episode Summary – Anne (S3E01)
In Sunnydale the Scoobies struggle to kill a Vampire and it eventually escapes. Taking care of the Vampire threat on the Hellmouth without the slayer is proving a difficult task. The gang mention that school is starting tomorrow and Willow hopefully talks up the idea of Buffy turning up at school. Xander reminds her that Buffy has been expelled and Willow laments not knowing where her best friend is.
Buffy and Angel are in each others arms on a beach and Angel tells her that “He’ll never leave, even if you kill me”. The strange situation is explained as Buffy wakes up from dreaming. She looks out the windows of an apartment, as police sirens ring out loudly.
The next morning we see the slayer working at a diner. She looks a forlorn figure as two men behave inappropriately towards her and she just resists the urge to respond. She approaches two lovers and after a brief conversation she moves away as the girl inquires whether they’ve met before.
Willow informs Giles about the Scoobies’ vampire exploits the previous night. Giles tells her to be careful while Willow adds they are getting better.
Willow bumps into Cordelia and they discuss how both of their summers went. Cordelia frets about her appearance and Willow’s glad to finally escape from her.
Oz and Willow then catch up and the latter is surprised when Oz tells her he’s back at school after not graduating the previous year. Xander interrupts and much like Cordelia appears to be very edgy and cagey, nervously awaiting bumping into his girlfriend. Willow assures him that his hair is fine.
Larry talks up Sunnydale’s Footballing chances noting that without too many deaths they might do quite well this season.
Cordelia and Xander finally see each other and the conversation doesn’t last long as both struggle to know what to say.
Away from Sunnydale, Buffy is back in her dark apartment looking very unhappy.
In the school library Giles explains he has a lead on Buffy in Oakland. Xander quickly dispels the idea but Willow tries to remain hopeful. Xander bluntly tells her they’ll find Buffy when she wants to be found.
Buffy is now walking the street and the girl she met at the diner calls out to her. Buffy doesn’t respond when the girl yells out “Anne” which is the name on her shirt in the local diner. It is only when the girl says “Buffy” that she stops. The girl’s name is Lily and she thanks Buffy for saving her when she was a vampire worshiper a few months back.
She assures Buffy she will keep her secret safe. The pair of them chat about names and Lily then invites Buffy to a party. Buffy declines saying she wants to be alone. An old man walks past saying he is “no one”. He walks into the middle of the road and Buffy runs out to save him getting hit in the process.
People crowd around Buffy but she quickly gets up and runs into a man holding some leaflets sending them flying onto the floor. As she helps him pick them up the man called “Ken” hands her a leaflet detailing a family home. Buffy says no to going to the home. Ken tells her she shouldn’t be here, saying “people get old here”.
Over at The Bronze Willow and Xander are depressed. Willow wonders where Buffy is whilst Xander can’t stop thinking about Cordelia. Oz joins the gang and they talk about how to improve their kill ratio. Xander catches a glimpse of Cordelia on the dance floor and decides “bait” is what is required.
At the Summers’ residence Joyce hears a knock at the door but its not Buffy. Giles enters and tells her he still can’t find Buffy. Joyce thanks him for his efforts and Giles reassures her Buffy will look after herself. Joyce can’t stop thinking about the last time she spoke to her daughter. Giles cuts in again saying she shouldn’t blame herself. Joyce makes the stunning revelation that she doesn’t blame herself, she blames Giles. She talks about Giles influence and relationship with Buffy, clearly upset she reveals she feels like he is responsible for taking her daughter away from her. Giles defends himself saying he didn’t make Buffy what she is, Joyce asks exactly what that is., something Giles can’t respond too.
Meanwhile Buffy’s back working at the diner. Lily comes in and explains how worried she is that her boyfriend has disappeared. Buffy’s reluctant to help but after Lily makes the revelation “she doesn’t know what to do” she changes her mind.
Buffy and Lily head off to the blood bank and inquire about Ricky (Lily’s boyfriend). Buffy suggests they split up and investigate where Ricky used to hang out. A worker at the blood bank tells them Ricky hasn’t been here and they both leave. As they depart the woman who told them Ricky hadn’t visited for awhile has a stern and then worried look on her face.
During her investigation Buffy goes into a building where people are clearly suffering and some even dead. She goes over to one of the victims
and checks his pulse, realizing he is indeed dead. She searches the man and is shocked when she sees a tattoo on his arm reading “Lily”. Its the same Tattoo Buffy saw when she met Lily and Ricky in the diner. The guy looked terribly old but Buffy came to the conclusion that it was Ricky.
Lily and Buffy reconvene at Buffy’s apartment. Buffy quickly tells Lily she thinks Ricky is dead. She tells Lily what she saw, how Ricky was old and that something had drained the life out of him. Lily inquires if it might have been a vampire but Buffy dispels that ides saying it might have something to do with what was in his blood. Lily struggles to cope with Ricky being dead, she wonders whether Buffy brought the monsters that killed Ricky. Buffy strongly denies that telling Lily you came to me and if you can’t deal its not my problem. Lily then storms out of the apartment.
Outside Ken the man who invited Buffy to the family home speaks to Lily and convinces her to go with him. He tells Lily that Ricky is “with us” now and tells her he will take care of her at family home.
Buffy goes back to the blood bank and looks through loads of files. The same worker who told them about Ricky not being there sees Buffy and threatens to call the police. Buffy doesn’t feel threatened at all and breaks the telephone. A clearly annoyed Buffy asks what’s going on and the worker tells her she just “gives them the name of the healthy ones”.
Ken continues to take Lily to the family home assuring her she will see Ricky soon.
Xander’s bait plan is taking place back in Sunnydale. Cordelia can’t see why Willow can’t be bait but no one listens to her claim. She struggles to come to conclusion that she is bait. Cordelia and Xander then begin to argue about their relationship as a vampire lurks behind a clueless Willow.
Elsewhere Ken and Lily continue on their journey while Buffy tries to talk her way into the family home. After concluding she sucks at undercover work she uses force to get through the door.
Buffy bursts in as Lily sticks her hand in some silver substance. Buffy gets straight to the point and asks Ken how he makes them old. Within moments Lily is sucked through into the Silver substance which is now revealed as a portal. Without hesitation Buffy jumps in after Lily through the portal. Ken tries to stop her but Buffy’s power leads to them both going through.
Buffy heads towards Lily while Ken rips off his face mask as he is revealed to be a demon. Buffy and Lily scamper away but there is no where to run to. there are humans being treated as slaves everywhere and Ken is the architect of it all. He knocks Buffy down and calmly tells Lily “welcome to my world, your never leaving”.
In Sunnydale Cordelia and Xander are still arguing and its only Willow’s cry for help that leads them to stop. Cordelia inadvertently knocks the vampire and Xander onto the floor and somehow the stake in Xander’s hand goes through the vampire’s heart. Cue to Cordelia and Xander reconciling and making out passionately on the floor.
Back in what can only be described as a hell dimension Buffy awakes locked in a cage with Lily. Buffy says to Lily this isn’t hell but Ken cuts her off. He tells Lily she belongs here and reveals how time moves quicker in this reality. Buffy figures out that Ken works people till their old and them dumps them back into the real world when they can no longer act as slaves. Ken confirms that people die through old age before anyone questions where they went.
Ken tells Buffy she’s pathetic and tells her she got her wish after running away from her problems. Ken’s guards tell Buffy and the other captives to work, that they are no one and to not complain. Buffy witnesses a man being beaten after saying his own name when he was asked who he was and is powerless to do anything. Everyone else answers that they are no one but when it comes to Buffy’s turn she responds “I’m Buffy, Buffy the Vampire Slayer and you are” in a way which underlines her toughness and nature in general. She then fights the guard and tells everyone that if they are not having fun they should follow me.
Buffy talks through strategy with Lily and tells Lily she can lead the people to safety. Lily apologizes to Buffy after earlier accusing her of being responsible for Ricky’s death. Buffy tells her this isn’t the time and hurries off to kick some demon butt, firstly luring them away from the other slaves.
Lily ushers everyone to potential safety whilst Buffy does what she does best, fighting. Ken frets as Buffy finds herself again and kills his guards. However soon the numbers prove too much and the guards grab hold of the slayer, Ken then catches up with Lily holding a sword to her throat and their efforts to escape all seem to have been in vain.
Buffy courageously breaks free but sees Ken holding Lily and stops in her tracks. Ken says “he’d like to slice open her guts and play with them”. At this moment, while giving a speech warning all the slaves to behave Ken lets go of Lily and walks close to the edge trying to get his point across. Lily pushes Ken off the edge which leads to him falling to what seems like certain death. Buffy resumes kicking the guards butts and then heads off to save all the slaves. Showing her strength the Slayer lifts the bars keeping the slaves locked up allowing everyone to escape. Out of nowhere Ken dives and knocks Buffy out of the way but as the bars come back down they crush Ken, who stupidly again leads to his own downfall. Buffy gets up picks up a weapon and puts him out of his misery
All the slaves escape and as they come back up through the portal it closes afterward. Back at Buffy’s or Anne’s apartment whatever you prefer Buffy tells Lily she has payed the rent for the next three weeks and that she can have her job at the diner. Buffy says she’ll call to check up on her. Lily nervously says she’s not good at looking after herself but Buffy assures her it gets easier but takes practice. Lily takes a glimpse at Buffy’s uniform with the name Anne on it, and asks if she could be Anne, Buffy smiles.
At the Summers residence Joyce hears a knock at the door and after initially thinking it might be Buffy she stops to ponder. She then seems to feel something and walks slowly towards the door. It is indeed Buffy and the pair hug.
