Joss Whedon to meet with FX

The news is all very preliminary, but John Landgraf, president of FX, has stated that he is set to be meeting over lunch with Joss Whedon in the upcoming weeks. Landgraf is a fan of Whedon’s work and while the purpose of the meeting has not been disclosed, on the heels of the Dollhouse project, it is certain that the discussion will center around what Joss is going to do next.

While Joss has primarily stuck with major networks for his project development, it could be that budget aside, the cable arena would be a better fit for Joss. With more control over content and philosophy behind his shows he may find that he could be good for cable and cable could be good for Joss.

We are a long ways away from finding out what Joss’ next project will be, and what home he will find next but meetings like this are a good sign. Rest assured that rumors will start flying about this meeting before the busboy has finished cleaning off the table.

For the rest of us, it is the painful waiting game to see what Joss will do next.

BBC Ripper Spinoff

After the conclusion of the Buffy The Vampire Slayer series, there was talk that Joss Whedon and the BBC were working together to create a Ripper spin-off centered around the Buffy character Giles. Anthony Stewart Head was said to be set to reprise his role for the project in whatever form it took.

There seemed to be potential for a few different iterations of the Ripper project, either a TV mini-series, TV Movie or recurring episodic series.

When Joss Whedon’s Dollhouse project got the green-light the Ripper project lost steam and Anthony Stewart Head became involved in the BBC series Merlin which airs in the U.S. on NBC.

With the cancellation of Dollhouse, could it be possible that the Ripper project will garner some attention again? Buffy fans can only hope. A series based around Rupert Giles (Buffy’s Watcher) whose sordid past earned him the nickname Ripper would be a welcome fix for all the Buffy fans who are “jonesing” for a return to the TV format of some of our beloved characters.

While it may prove a possibility that Ripper will gain momentum, I think that we should all temper our excitement. Joss has said on numerous occasions that his projects are limited by time and not a lack of ideas. If his track record is any indication, whatever project Joss choses to work on next will both entertain and amaze all Whedon fans.

Dominic Knight discusses this issue more eloquently than I do. See here for his article regarding the Ripper series and its potential.

Whedon's Dollhouse Send Expectations Through the Roof

While working on my post for the Fall Season TV shows, I did some surface research on Dollhouse, the new Joss Whedon show airing on Fox beginning in January. I decided to do a little more research and see if I could come up with more info to give you a better picture of what this show will be about. What I found was even more exciting than I had anticipated. Read the rest of this entry »
