I am behind this week in recording the podcast for Gingerbread, I have my show prep all done but I have been sick and my voice is in no shape to record the podcast. If you have any last minute suggestions for show topics or items that you would like me to discuss then now is your last chance. I hope to be well enough to record tomorrow (Friday) night.

Ah, yet another case in which Joyce is a huge jerk, and doesn't seem to have any consequences. I'm not talking about trying to burn Buffy at the stake; how about her line, "I wanted a normal daughter, and I got a slayer." I'm probably the only person who didn't cry when watching "The Body."

Be sure to rest up your voice.  We don't want to lose you for a few weeks if you overdue it.

Hope you feel better soon.

I just listened to the Gingerbread podcast. I'm not sure why you said we wouldn't like what you had to say, Bryan. I thought it was good. I liked your comparison to the Halloween candy scare and xenophobia. I wonder if Joyce's actions were brought on by a hypnosis by the demon or mere suggestion. Was the demon's presence just a way for Joyce to become more uninhibited, much like people under the influence of alcohol? I don't think she would have burned anyone at the stake normally, but I don't think her feelings toward Buffy and her friends came out of nowhere. Man, what is wrong with the parents in Sunnydale? Not a good parent in the whole lot, as far as I'm concerned.

I just felt like some of the topics or comments that I made in the podcast could potentially be hot-buttons for some people and perhaps a little more political than I usually am in the podcast. I am glad you enjoyed it, I thought that the topics that I got into were relevant given the subject matter of the episode.

Here's my 2 cents' on "Gingerbread"

Liked the concept of the demon that thrives on paranoia.  Us Angel fans will parallel this to one of my favorite Angel episodes "Are You Now or Have You Ever Been".  In keeping with the notion that Angel is the "darker" series, I gotta say I loved the ending there.

For what might be the best treatment of paranoid behaviour, see the classic Twilight Zone episode "The Monsters are Due on Maple Street"

Cordelia had some of the best lines. The one Bryan mentioned " . . .whatever the boy of witch is", but it continued on with "plus being the poster child for 'yuck'"; also her "I hate you" to Giles when he told her where the toadstone came from, and my favorite, to Giles "One of these days you're going to wake up in a coma"

I liked how the guys bullying Michael were immediately intimidated by Buffy.  Guess her reputation precedes her!

I was thinking the same thing this morning!

Excellent parallel.  That makes me wonder how many Buffy episode plots might be similar to Twilight Zone episodes.

As regular listeners know I'm listening to Bryan's podcasts as companions while I'm rewatching the series so I just listened to this one as well as the Amends and The Wish podcasts in the past couple of days.

Well done again Bryan.  I enjoyed your take on things.  I know I'll always see something for the first time through your eyes which is a very cool thing.

It was also a little deja vu to hear you talking about the special Buffy podcast we all did together for Tuning in to SciFi TV last fall.  That was a total blast and as you mentioned it flows really well even though the four of us had never all gotten together before.  It shouldn't be a surprise but it's always fun to see how much Buffy fans can be on the same page so easily even when they first get together.  It's not like we all agree on things but we usually are able to communicate and understand each other quite quickly.  I often see that at Buffy and Whedon panels at Dragon*Con as well.

Kevin

On the commentary to Hush, JW mentions that he wanted the Gentlemen to be iconically scary, like the doll in Trilogy of Terror (which totally freaked me out when I saw it as a kid, BTW).  It occurred to me that the doll segment of Trilogy of Terror, like Hush, is silent, other than a short piece at the beginning and one at the end. Trilogy of Terror was written by Richard Matheson, who wrote the Invaders episode of the Twilight Zone -- also silent.

Oh, great. Thanks about reminding me of the doll in Trilogy of Terror.  That was probably the cause of most, if not all, of my childhood nightmares  Wink

Richard Matheson is one of my favorite writers.  I'd put a most underappreaciated film, "Duel", up there with "Hush" and the "Trilogy of Terror" segment as a work that creates terror with minimal dialog.

Richard Matheson is one of my favorite writers.

He also wrote the scripts for the Kolchak TV movies, The Night Stalker & The Night Strangler, back in the early 70s.  Those movies launched 'Kolchak: The Night Stalker' TV series which is one of my all time favorites.  I'm old enough to have watched it live when it aired in '74/'75.

That series was also one of the big inspirations for Chris Carter when he created 'The X-Files'.

How awesome is Carl Kolchak?  Not to mention one of my favorite character actors, Simon Oakland as Vincenzo.  Did you see the "new" Night Stalker?  I have not and probably will not out of my disgust at them having remade it.

I did checkout the remake.  It wasn't terrible but it also wasn't all that great either.  Not a shock that it was cancelled quickly.

Last year when I did a complete series rewatch I also read "The Nightstalker: A 25th Anniversary Companion" which had a lot of great background and behind the scenes stuff about the series.  It doesn't appear to be in print right now but I'd highly recommend it if you can find it for a good price.
