I think Angie's and Bryan's conversation on the podcast about vampires who are simply predators (killing, as their natures dictate, for survival) versus those who take pleasure in evil and violence for its own sake, is very interesting.  It seems like those in the latter category are carefully chosen by their Sires for some quality or other that they possess as humans.  Like, the Master chooses Darla because she's angry and spurns god on her deathbed; Darla chooses Liam because he wants to be something, be it good or bad, and she obviously sees darkness in him; Drusilla is chosen because of the sight;William because Dru sees what he can be -- a wise, brave knight and a fool, as per the Darla episode (although I think there are other reasons he is chosen as well). Also, vampires in this category aren't turned in a snatch-grab-release situation.  They seem to get turned because they acquiesce in being turned, to some extent --  inviting it, or accepting an offer, or after a perverted version of a courtship, or out of despair and need.  And they get turned by someone who wants to keep them, and who teaches and cultivates them.  So, these may be some reasons that account for how they differ from other vamps.

Also -- I agree that Kate's reaction here is understandable.  But what I can't stand is how her stridency and self-righteousness stop her from ever getting over it.  Gunn has as much, if not more of a reason to hate vampires, and he goes through his own struggles in coming to accept Angel.  But he's certainly more open to checking his own prejudices and pre-conceived notions than Kate is.  She simply has no tolerance for any gray area; nor does she have any capacity to forgive.  I think the difference between Kate and Gunn really gets emphasized when they first meet (I think in Dear Boy) when her instinct is to assume Gunn is a dirty piece of crap the second she sees him.  I've always thought her response to him in that episode is pretty racist.

I agree that all of our main Vampires do share a special quality that was taken advantage of.

I'd like to know who turned umm...lets say Sunday(she has initiative).

Kate is a middle class white female...with a job in law enforcement(I guess what Buffy could have been if she chose to follow her s2 aptitute test)my point being ...prime candidate for being a) Racist and b)sheltered from the grayness in the world.
I still like her though.Lol

That's why Kate is so dangerous.  She's law enforcement, and she has a lot of power because of that; yet she willfully puts blinders on and refuses to see distinctions, subtle or otherwise.

I actually went back and watched Dear Boy, and the way she responds to Gunn is really horrible.

It is, and I think that scene was a comment from the writers on the racism which seems to be endemic in a lot of police forces, particularly the LAPD.  She's not a bad cop, but she reacts in that manner when confronted with a young black man.  Admittedly she was under a lot of stress at that moment and perhaps not as in control as she should normally be.
