Xander is one of my favorite characters. All of the regulars are flawed, but he to me does fewer truly awful things than most of the regulars.
I understand the potentials' hate, he didn't recognize the awesomeness that is Willow. They also don't realize that what is happening now is that Cordy has to break up with him to move to Angel.
Xander is loyal to his friends (more so than his family, even, and rightly so) and much braver than he has any right to be. He wants to help right from the beginning, even though he may have little or nothing to contribute initially.
He is about to show some signs of growth, his quiet confidence after saving the school in The Zeppo being an example. His relationship with Anya is one of my favorites of the entire show, and shows considerable growth on his part given his demon magnet history. He is awful in Hell's Bells, but I blame the writers entirely for that disgrace, my least favorite episode. He becomes a competent adult in season 5, saves the world in season 6 (yellow crayon), and plays a good role as a mentor to the potentials and Dawn in season 7.

I got myself into a bit of trouble on the Potential Spoilers FB page...defending Xander. So the only thing I can say here is that I adore Xander and I understand that he does some truely stupid things, but I don't believe there is any malevolence behind his actions. He does stuff out of love and because he's not mature(brain wise) it all comes out abit topsy turvy.

I really love Xander, flaws and all. Like Bob said, all of the characters are flawed. I don't agree that what Xander does comes out of love. I think his character development is uneven. He is written as an "everyman," and he often is a device used by the writers to advance the plot wherever they need him. I don't think his loathing of Angel was believable. I don't think he would have acted that way.
Missy, how did you get yourself into trouble over at the PotentialCast? Did you spoil them?

I didn't spoil anyone(I learnt my lesson the 1st time Lol)
I was defending Xander, Conveying tone is impossible over the internet and some things were taken the wrong way.
I think you'll notice the last thing I wrote was Xander related and honestly about a week ago. It really upset me that what I said was taken the wrong way...hell even now I feel uncomfortable writing this.

I haven't listened to the potentialcast, but I can understand how, mid-season 3, viewers could have a lot of problems with Xander. I find a lot of fault with him during season 3, and at the end of season 2, as well, and can really experience some major dislike for him. In the early seasons, he sees things as very black and white, he's very judgmental and defensive, and he's dishonest in a very big way in at least two very serious situations. On the other hand, there's the Zeppo, and his sweet gesture in buying Cordy the prom dress. I have a real love/hate relationship with Xander in seasons 1-3, and I have to remind myself that the character is 16 and 17, and it's natural that he acts like an ass much of the time.
But post-season 3, I love Xander so much. He just breaks my heart in season 4. I'm having a very Xander-centric experience watching season 4 right now (although I anticipate a shift when Spike returns full time).
As for Hell's Bells: I buy it. And I don't hate him for it. He didn't handle it well, or in a timely fashion, but ultimately, I think it was the right decision.

@Missy, still don't understand what you said. But message me if you don't want to talk about it here. And what did you spoil the potentials on?!? Poor you! I'm going to guest host on the new Twin Peaks Podcast, and I'm already sweating it. I don't want to spoil them on something. I'm so afraid I'm going to blurt something out, like who killed Laura Palmer.

Basically I said I can't see why anyone would think that Xander is intentionally an ass. Someone took it as me saying that anyone who doesn't agree with me is stupid. As for the spoiler ,I spoiled Kim(Just Kim) on Willow and Tara...I friended a girl months ago and out of the blue she posted a clip of Will&Tara from Entropy (the final scene when they get back together). Kim saw the frozen image of them kissing and thats the end Lol I brought it up on the Spoiler page when it first happened...which was acouple of months ago now.

I think The Zeppo might change some attitudes (and of course, The Prom). I can't remember what I thought about Xander the first time, but I certainly didn't hate him. I think I somewhat ignored him, as I was too concentrated on Willow, my (then) favourite character. As was pointed in some episode of PotentialCast, when Cordelia says something stupid/"evil", it's easy to just go "Oh, that Cordelia", but when it's Xander (or Joyce, another Potential favourite ), it's harder to let it slide. My favourite Xander-moment: when he steps out of the car in Lessons, with the line "No matter how much we appear to have changed on the surface, we're still the same" (or something like that, can't find the exact quote). You just know that you can always depend on him.

They don't like Faith so far. I think Alirio likes her but that's about it! I think that Faith gets sooo much better as time goes on and really is developed on Angel.
