So the latest podcast for Dopplegangland is a little behind schedule, my guest co-host for this episode is Bob (editor for the Hellmouth Empire). We tried to record last week to have the podcast out before the holidays but we were thwarted by the collapse of the Skype super-nodes. Bob and I spent most of the Christmas holidays working feverishly to repair Skype's supernodes and finally fixed them late Sunday night. Then Monday I was sick and couldn't record. We are scheduled to record tonight so be looking for the latest podcast in the next few days.

That Skype super-node issue wreaked havoc on a lot of podcaster's plans.
What we did to get around Skype being down was to use Google Talk which is a free add-on for GMail that lets you place Skype like calls to fellow GMail users. Don't see a way to get more than two people on a call like Skype can but Google Talk was a good alternative in a pinch.

Thanks Kevin, I will have to remember that for next time. It's always good to have redundant systems in place.

I'm not sure if this is common knowledge Or even if it was a Joke on Joss' part( I read about it roughly 7yrs ago) But Joss was tossing up between Xander & Willow on who was going to "Come Out"....I believe this is the ep he decided that it would be Willow. I was actually reading the other day that when Seth Green chose to leave earlier than expected....that was the moment it became obvious to Joss that Willow was going to "Come Out"....So as much as it looks planned it came about because of circumstance & necessity. GREAT Ep and GREAT Podcast I <3 Vamp Willow

I had heard that also about Xander. They had certainly teased it in the same way they had with Willow, with Larry believing that Xander was gay. Whether by choice or not, I think they made the right choice. They had a much deeper pool of female characters to draw from. This got so pronounced by the end that Willow wound up being best man, as what were the alternatives? He hated Spike. Giles was gone. Jonathan? Warren? Clem?

Yeah Willow really was the only person. Definitely the best choice.

Can you imagine Xander/Clem Shippers? Xem? Clander? Clander sounds like a disease you could pick up after hanging out with Clem (no offense, Clem, I love you).
Ooh! Xander and Giles = Gander! Awesome.

Yay, for first appearance of D'Hoffryn, who is one of my favorite minor characters.
I had some time on my hands, so I did a frame-by-frame look-see when Vamp Willow was holding regular Willow and changed to her vamp face. Well done! I think the effects don't really get their due on this series, and it was seamless, even frame-by-frame. I forget this show was late 1990's, early 2000s . . . for that time, the computer/effects folks really did a good job.
Love the Vamp Willow eye-roll when Xander talked about him being a bad-ass vampire.
Maybe I'm too much of a Buffy/Angel nerd, but did anyone notice that the first girl Vamp Willow picked out and later fed on at the Bronze bore more than a casual resemblance to Tara? Not her face, but in her hair, hairstyle and body style. Maybe it was the Knob Creek.

Bryan asked whether or not Buffy could kill Vamp Willow and whether Xander could kill her. I think Buffy could, but I don't think Xander could. Bryan and Bob talked about why Vampire Willow got Xander when regular Willow couldn't. I think Vamp Xander was weak. I think he was drawn to strong-willed women, and Vamp Willow obviously knew how to take control of the situation. I wonder if there was anything that could have happened from this episode on to change Faith back to the good side. Was there anything that could have been said or done by the scoobies or by the Mayor to make Faith go back?

I agree, smartgirl63, that VampXander is weaker or at least more submissive than VampWillow, and that's because VampXander is drawn to strong women who control the relationship -- just like human Xander!! Another example of the carryover of human traits into the vampire self, which, as Bob pointed out, is remarked on very specifically in this episode. This issue has really interesting and far-reaching implications throughout the rest of the series as well as in AtS. I think it's noteworthy that Buffy stops Angel from completing his thoughts about this, and I don't think it's only because she's trying to comfort Willow. I think she's still clinging to her need to see Angel and Angelus as completely separate entities -- to see one as all good and one as all bad, with no crossover -- and that's a lot harder to do if she is forced to accept that his human self is part of his vampire self. Also, she wants to hold on to this notion so that she doesn't have to question the calling she's been chosen for; but later, she's forced to deal with the moral gray area of being a slayer, including the possibility that humanity and the potential to change may exist in vampires.
Bob, if you're around, I'm curious about your comment on the podcast that Xander doesn't get Willow and doesn't really care for her. I'm not sure why you feel this way, and would really be interested in hearing your feelings about this in more detail, if you're so inclined. I agree with you 100% that, romantically, they are wrong for each other. But I think Xander really loves her, and she him, and that they understand each other. Doesn't Xander pretty much saves the world with his love for Willow? What do others think about this?
